Odia devotional songs can't be imagined without the bhajans of lord Jagannath and there are a few legendary singers who dedicated their entire life for the Jagannath culture. Any insight into devotional music scene of Odisha will be incomplete without the legendary singer Arabinda Muduli.

Born on September 1, 1961 at Khanati village of Khurda district, Arabinda had all the opportunity to earn money and fame through commercial music albums and film songs. But he dedicated his life to lord Jagannath and turned down big offers for film.

Arabinda started training under the legendary Bhajan Samrat Bhikari Bal at the age of 18. His dedication as a vocal artist can be witnessed from the fact that in early 1980s he used to travel around 20km daily to learn singing from Bhikari Bal.

Inspired by his father Bharat Muduli, who was a singer of folk dance forms of Basanta Rasa, Ramalila and Danda Nata, Arabinda was attracted towards music at an early age. He took his initial training under his father and village guru Mir Mukram Ali.

In 1985 at the famous Saradhabali Bhajan Samaroh in Puri Arabinda got a chance to sing a bhajan ‘Bali Kheluthile Nanda Suta Kala Kanhei’ and this was the turning point for him. Apart from being the first choice of many leading music labels in Odisha for over two decades he was also a B High Grade artist at All India Radio and Doordarshan.

He died on 1 March 2018. A foundation named after him, Arabinda Muduli Foundation has been established in 2019 to preserve the legacy of the popular singer.
